Adapter assembly instructions for installing the Porsche 996 steering wheel on Porsche 964.
The Porsche 996 steering wheel, whether 3-spoke or 4-spoke, cannot be installed directly on the steering column of the Porsche 964, you need our adapter. This is because the grooved profile of the steering column is the same between the 2 cars, but the shape of the steering wheel changes. The adapter also acts as a spacer, because it brings the steering wheel closer, so the installation procedure is the same as that of the spacer on the steering wheel. Only the last step changes: instead of the original 964 steering wheel, you will mount the updated 996. We recommend that you do not connect the new airbag to the 964 connector, you do not guarantee that the new type airbag will work with the old type electronics. Let’s remember that the 3 generations were produced over a period of 15 years. In any case, it should be remembered that on all cars, not only Porsche, the functionality of the airbag is no longer guaranteed after 10 years, due to chemical decay of the properties of the pyrotechnic gas inside. The procedure applies to installing the Porsche 993 , 996 and 986 steering wheel (3 or 4 spokes) on Porsche 964, 928, 968, 944 with 964 steering wheel with airbag.
