How bringing the steering wheel closer improves the driving position?

This type of need is usually felt by drivers in cars without telescopic adjustment of the steering wheel position, or people with long legs: in order to drive in a decent way, we are used to calibrate the driving position holding the steering wheel as we are most comfortable to, and adapt the legs position subsequently. But if the steering wheel distance from the dashboard can’t be adjusted, legs are forced to stay in reduced room, hitting the dahsboard and leading to pains to knees, ankles, hips, lumbar back… to avoid all this, the seat has to be slided a couple of cm (or inches) backwards.

Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem because the steering wheel becomes too far, and needs to be hold with over extended arms, in a very unnatural position which usually leads to neck and shoulder pains.

This problem, depending on the body structure of the driver and his/her feeling, can be VERY annoying, making people thinking about change the car.

The steering wheel spacer for Suzuki Jimny mk3 brings the steering wheel 5 cm (2″) closer to the driver, allowing to move the seat backwards and gain room for the legs, while still holding the steering wheel in a natural way, without over-extended arms. This is a godsend boost for the driving pleasure.

In past, to bring the steering wheel closer to the driver in a vehicle that does not have depth adjustment from factory, you could only remove the OEM steering wheel and replace it with an aftermarket one with different offset.

To install an aftermarket steering wheel, its own specific steering wheel hub was needed, so 2 components had to be purchased to solve the problem.

Until the 1980s and early 1990s, this was a good solution, but since steering wheels have airbags and steering wheel controls, give up with these accessories to bring the steering wheel closer had become an unacceptable compromise, which could even lead the owner of the car to change it with another already equipped with telescopic adjustable steering wheel.

With the Spacershop steering wheel spacer, this is no longer necessary: you can bring the car’s OEM steering wheel closer and thus keep the airbag and steering wheel controls active.

The video was shot on a Suzuki Swift, because we didn’t have an Jimny available. The procedure is the same, as well as the spacer itself.
