Instructions valid for all Porsches from the mid-80s to the early 2000s. with steering wheel with airbag.

  • Porsche Carrera 964, 968, 928.
  • Porsche Carrera 993 and 996.
  • Porsche Boxster 986.
  • Porsche Carrera GT

You can also follow this procedure to install the steering wheel spacer on 911s without airbags, there is only one step less.

These instructions are also valid, with small intuitive variations, for Audi 90s with airbag:

  • 100 S4 C4, A6 S6 C4
  • 80 B4, Coupe, Convertible, S2, RS2

ATTENTION: To disassemble the steering wheel there are many videos on YouTube, it can be useful to watch a couple of them before starting.

1) Park the car with the wheels straight, because the ribbed has no marker and it is easy to reassemble the steering wheel rotated by 1 tooth and find yourself at the end of the assembly with the steering wheel slightly rotated.
2) Disconnect the battery (negative terminal).
3) Remove the airbag from the steering wheel. To do this, unscrew the 2 torx screws behind the steering wheel itself (on some cars they are Allen key). After unscrewing, gently pull out the airbag and disconnect the connector that powers it. It usually has a safety latch and you may need to unlock it by prying it up with a small, flathead screwdriver. After disconnecting the connector, place the airbag securely, e.g. on the rear seat, with the Porsche crest facing downwards.
4) Loosen the center nut, without removing it. Because after years, the steering wheel can be “glued” to the ribbed of the steering column and can be hard to remove (there are those who use the rubber mallet), and if pulling it suddenly comes off it can hurt you and tear the hanging cables.
5) When you are sure that the steering wheel is unlocked and can be easily removed, completely unscrew the nut and remove it, gently passing the wires inside the steering wheel, without ever pulling them, because otherwise you could damage the rotating contact to which the wires are connected, and hear, at the end of the installation, an annoying “click” when you turn the steering wheel while driving.
6) Slide the aluminium part of the hub onto the steering column, respecting the orientation of the steering wheel. The steering wheel has an aluminum rib on the left, which radially presses a spring. The same rib is reproduced on the spacer, and goes in exactly the same position. Be careful to respect the horizontality: otherwise it is very easy to miss a tooth and find yourself at the end of the assembly with a crooked steering wheel and straight wheels, and you must repeat the procedure restoring the alignment.
7) The wiring harness on the rotary contact must be routed through the milling to the right of the spacer, just as it is in the steering wheel.
8) Use the nut supplied with its washer to attach the aluminum hub to the steering wheel.
9) Screw the steel hub onto the aluminum hub using the 4 Allen screws supplied. In the middle of the two, tuck in the black aluminum cover first. The 3 milled seats must be oriented as on the first fixed aluminum piece: one at the top, one at the bottom and one on the right, in the one on the right the cables must be passed. Use the Loctite to tighten the 4 screws.
10) It may be necessary to lengthen a cable, that of the horn, in this case use the extension cord supplied, with fastons.
11) Reassemble the steering wheel in the opposite direction to when you removed it. The only difference is that you will insert it into the steel part of the spacer instead of directly on the column, but the spacer exactly reproduces the column with its ribbed and thread. Handle the cables with care and be careful not to accidentally pull on them.
12) Be careful when re-inserting the airbag in its housing: the pin has only one direction of insertion, so make sure to respect it, and when the airbag is re-inserted, also be careful that it does not press on the cables, otherwise the horn may not work or remain on all the time. When the airbag is correctly positioned, it is easy to tighten the screws. We still suggest watching videos on youtube to get an idea.
13) Reconnect the battery.
End.
