The SpacerShop steering wheel spacer is a mechanical accessory consisting of 2 parts, one in steel and one in aluminum. It has the function of a spacer, or a shim, of an extension that brings the steering wheel of vehicles closer to the driver. It brings it 5 or 6 centimeters closer, depending on the model of vehicle on which it is mounted. It can be mounted on cars, vans, pick-ups, trucks, buses, commercial vehicles of all kinds.
It is a new invention, available on the market for a few years, whose novelty consists in being able to bring the standard steering wheel, original equipment, the one with which the vehicle was built, closer.
Then bring the steering wheel closer with the airbag, and, if there are any, the steering wheel controls and paddles that operate the sequential gearbox of vehicles with automatic transmissions.
The novelty and specialty of the steering wheel spacer is that it brings the steering wheel closer and leaves all the options on the steering wheel itself active and functioning: the aforementioned airbag, the radio buttons, cruise control, bluetooth, steering wheel heating, lane assist and if the vehicle has an automatic transmission, even the buttons or paddles that allow the gearbox to operate in manual and sequential mode.
It is guaranteed for life and is maintenance-free. It is never replaced.
The SpacerShop steering wheel spacer improves the driving position, giving a feeling of more space in the driver’s seat and better handling of the vehicle. After installation, the seat is moved back to maintain the usual way of holding the steering wheel and the distance from the chest. It creates so much legroom. With this little trick the car (or the van, or the camper…) becomes more comfortable in any situation. In traffic, it is more comfortable to operate the pedals, and you no longer bump the dashboard with your knees. Always the knees are spared from the pain of an uncomfortable position that is no longer there, as well as the shoulders and neck. This is also the case on long motorway journeys.
The spacer on the steering wheel also generates the effect of amplifying the steering feeling, because it increases the feeling of more prompt and direct steering, making the vehicle feel like a glove of which you feel an integral part, not just a driver who can operate the controls. The whole driving setup becomes much more natural and there is a noticeable increase in driving pleasure. Even vehicles intended for everyday use and not particularly performing, become pleasant to drive as if they were sports cars.
This is why we say that the spacer on the steering wheel is a driving amplifier and makes the vehicle more spacious inside, therefore more comfortable, and smaller outside, therefore more manageable and pleasant to drive.
It maintains the originality of the vehicle’s interior. It is the only product on the market that improves the driving position without forcing you to change the steering wheel and is designed in a way that looks like a dashboard component born with the vehicle. It is discreet and not very visible, oriented more to the pleasure of use than to be noticed.
It does not modify the vehicle permanently. There is a specific one for each vehicle. And it’s designed to be installed so that it doesn’t require permanent modifications to the vehicle, such as cutting or welding. It can be disassembled and everything goes back to the way it was before.
Those who love tuning and driving on the track will have already guessed how well they will feel: by moving the seat back a little you can better modulate the action on the brake, even with the left foot, and the heel-toe is better. With the steering wheel close together, you can also lower the seat a little and no longer touch the roof with your helmet.
The SpacerShop steering wheel spacer repeats the mounting method that car manufacturers use to mount the steering wheel on vehicles. All steering wheels are mounted on cars by means of a single large threaded nut or a single large screw, and a grooved profile, or toothed, called ribbed, which differs for each brand of car. The steering wheel spacer is mounted in an intermediate position between the steering wheel and the steering column, and is built with the same materials that are used to make the steering wheel and column: aluminum and steel. The spacer replicates the shapes of the steering wheel and the steering column, even the ribbed one, to ensure easy, fast, safe and eternal assembly. It is meant to never be replaced or checked. Like the steering wheel of your car: have you thought about it that it is never checked during servicing?
Each steering wheel spacer is sold with the assembly instructions included, which can be consulted first on this site and then downloaded, and always updated to be dedicated specifically to the vehicle on which they are applied.
The installation can be carried out either by a mechanic or by yourself. Whenever possible, we produce an installation tutorial video, specific to each vehicle, and publish it on our youtube channel and on this website.
We are available to clarify any doubts before purchase, but also during installation, at any time. Via email, Messenger, Whatsapp, phone and even video call.
You can do the installation at our headquarters, from dealers, and if you are not too far away, it happened that we went to your home. We don’t have any problems with the day or the time. We have done installations during the lunch break, after dinner, and even on Sundays. We like our work and we don’t have any problems with working hours, unless we have special needs.
You can buy it online on this site, browsing through the product pages divided by car brand. We accept payments by PayPal and credit card. We ship worldwide, preferably with DHL courier. You can also order directly by email from the contact form at the bottom of the page.
We have an extensive sales network, which can be consulted below and on the dedicated page.
This is one of our strengths: almost all of our steering wheel spacers have been developed in collaboration with customers, who often live on different continents.
If you can’t find the spacer for you, we’ll evaluate the creation from scratch together. You don’t need to have your car here, but you must first identify the exact model and year of your car, even better if you send us a photo of the steering wheel.
It can take up to 4-8 weeks to create a new spacer, and it may happen that we send you a prototype, even 3D printed, to try to mount on your car to evaluate the aesthetic impact and if the shapes and sizes are the right ones.
We have sent prototypes back and forth from the US or Australia many times and have always been able to please customers, who usually have a lot of fun in this type of technical collaboration.
Our spacers all have a length of 5 cm (2″) which varies slightly depending on the model of machine to be installed. This length is also the one that everyone is usually comfortable with.
It is not possible to have it shorter because there are minimum thicknesses to be respected for safety. It can be made longer, up to 10 cm (4″), but it rarely happens that we are asked to do so, and only for people 2 meters tall and up, or for drivers with disabilities.
Normally we do not accept requests for spacers 1 or 2 cm longer because the cost of designing them and especially producing them becomes very high in relation to the benefit obtained.
If your car already has depth adjustment, the steering wheel spacer can be mounted and the existing adjustment continues to work. Even in the case of an electric column.
The turn signal and windshield wiper levers are not approached with the steering wheel, because they are originally mounted on the car’s column. For the first 2 days of riding you have to get used to it, but you quickly learn to operate them with your fingertip and it is not uncomfortable either. The benefit of the steering wheel approach is greatly appreciated, and it never happens that someone regrets it to the point of wanting to remove the spacer because of the indicator levers.
There are those who have mounted brackets purchased online and mounted them on the levers to bring them closer. We advise you to consider buying them after a few weeks of riding with the spacer mounted, to be sure you really want them.
Yes, returns are accepted. In this case, however, the shipping cost is at your expense and you will be reimbursed after we have checked that the product has no damage (even if only cosmetic) of any kind.
Accepting the return makes the purchase more serene, then it almost never happens that we are asked for a return for this reason. On the contrary, it is more likely that the same customer will want to buy again in the future, when he changes the machine. Because once you’ve tried the spacer on the steering wheel, you can’t do without it.
In any case, if you disassemble the spacer on the steering wheel, your car will return exactly to the way it was before. The steering wheel spacer is a reversible modification.
Almost all cars have very long wires inside the steering wheel, and after installing the spacer on the steering wheel they can be reconnected easily, and without ever being tense while driving.
In some cases, the wires of the steering wheel controls are too short, so we will provide you, included in the steering wheel spacer, with wiring harnesses that allow you to stretch the wires without having to cut and weld them.
This is to make sure that in the future you can remove the spacer on the steering wheel and leave the car as it was before.
Whenever possible, we manufacture the wiring harnesses using the original connectors inside the steering wheel, equipped with a snap closure. Sometimes it is not possible to find these connectors on the market, and we have to resort to generic connectors, which still work well.
Normally, going to the official service network of your car still under warranty and with any part of it modified (an oversized intercooler or turbine for example), can generate problems with the warranty of the parent company. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, because the policies of parent companies regarding warranty are not the same for everyone. There are those who are very rigid, but also those who are flexible and if the part mounted has no relation to the failure that may happen to you on the machine, the warranty remains valid. For example: if you mount the spacer on the steering wheel and the engine breaks down some time later, there are dealers who will change it for you under warranty because the spacer on the steering wheel has no influence on the engine. While other dealers may decide otherwise.
In any case, the steering wheel spacer can be disassembled without a trace of it remaining on the machine.
As for the homologation, it is not homologated for road use. At the moment we are too small a company to undertake the bureaucratic path that leads to the possibility of obtaining the regular updating of the registration certificate, but it is something we would like to do in the future. For countries outside of Italy, the laws are different for each nation. We have supported individual customers who wanted TÜV homologation for their specific car and we are working to TÜV homologate all our products, but it will take time.
In the meantime, we are updating the site by publishing technical drawings that have been requested by individual customers to obtain TÜV approval on their car, so that you can download them and show them to your TÜV office before purchase to find out if they are useful.
All our products, starting with the steering wheel spacers, are manufactured in Italy and designed by us near Monza. We have the software and the technical preparation to carry out the design, the CNC machines and the CAD-CAM software for production and we also rely on external companies, always around Monza, for some stages of processing. Our suppliers are reliable and highly selected companies that we have known, in some cases, for more than 30 years, during past work experiences.
The raw materials, aluminium and steel, are purchased new, in bars, from large companies here near Monza, which provide certification of the chemical composition of the alloys used.
Some components are purchased abroad, and when it comes to large quantities and ongoing collaborations, we visit the supplier companies and their production facilities to be sure of quality.
Many of the products you see finished are the result of multiple samples and prototypes that are continuously improved to arrive at a result that satisfies us. To ensure quality for customers and to control how the suppliers we work with work.
The real question we are often asked is: “but can you make a living from this?”. Because the novelty and uniqueness of the product is such that it often raises doubts to which we are now accustomed, and we must confess that we also enjoy it a little.
This company mostly only makes spacers on the steering wheel, it was born from this idea, which I had by chance and which was originally not thought to become a job. It was the enthusiasm and requests of customers from all over the world (we sell 95% abroad) that pushed us to create this company, and we have continued to grow even during the Covid period.
The passion for cars, for driving, for racing, and for the elaboration and development of components, and the people we have met along the way have always given new stimuli to expand the range of products we offer, which also extends to products that are not ours but that have convinced us so much that we have become dealers, such as OS-Giken limited-slip differentials and lightweight Liteblox batteries.
Whenever possible, we create new products or experiment with new solutions, some of which then come to market, such as steering wheel shifts. We don’t set ourselves creative limits, and we make some projects just for the pleasure of doing them. The only limits are time and resources, which fortunately increase as the company grows.
Over the years, we have seen that many customers change their car and ask us for the spacer on the steering wheel for their new car as well, and this has always given us confidence in the future.
If you have read this far, you are now a bit part of us and we thank you for the attention and support that you may want to give us.
