Steering wheel gearbox assembly instructions for BMW M3 SMG
The steering wheel shift kit for BMW M3 SMG comes with a modified steering wheel spacer that acts as an adapter to be able to match it to the original steering wheel with airbag and maintain all its functionality. The original paddle shifters will have to be removed, but the steering wheel controls and airbag can be retained.
The steering wheel gearbox is supplied pre-assembled and already with the wiring harness that interfaces with the original connector coming from the machine.
The installation can be done by anyone and takes no more than half an hour, and you don’t have to make any changes to the machine to install it.
Inside the load-bearing structure of the gearbox is hidden the electronic part that guarantees its operation. The levers operate 2 microswitches, connected to a wiring harness that replicates the original electronics. Everything converges to a 2-pin connector like the original , so as to ensure an immediate connection with the connector on the machine, without the need to carry out electronic operations.
The procedure is as follows:
- Disconnect the battery
- Remove the airbag from the steering wheel
- Disconnect the 2 (or 3) connectors that go from the steering wheel to the car
- Unscrew the central screw and pull out the steering wheel
- Insert the kit, which is pre-assembled, into the steering column, and connect the connector of the kit where the connector of the original vanes used to go
- Slide the steering wheel into the spacer pin and connect the steering wheel wires to the machine
- insert the long center screw included in the kit and tighten it to 60 Nm
- Replace the airbag in the steering wheel
